The American Heart Association says Americans consume on average about 111 grams, or 22 teaspoons, of discretionary sugar per day and has called for setting a "prudent" daily upper limit of just over 30 grams - 6 teaspoons of added sugars for average-sized women and just over 45 grams - 9 teaspoons - for average-sized men. For children the limit is lower - about 3 teaspoons per day for those on a 1,600-calorie-per-day diet. One 12-ounce soda typically contains 8 to 10 teaspoons of added sugar.
