A couple described as elderly were struck by an SUV and critically injured while leaving Mountain View High School's graduation Thursday night.

The couple's daughter was pushing her mother in a wheelchair, and her father was walking by his wife's side, as they crossed North Thornydale Road south of West Linda Vista Boulevard, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire District spokesman.

The daughter was not struck by the SUV, Goldberg said.

The couple, who both suffered life-threatening injuries, were treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital, he said. He said the woman's condition, in particular, was "extremely critical."

The area where the two were struck was dark, and they were not in a crosswalk, Goldberg said. Because of the graduation, many people were coming and going, Thornydale was very congested, and there were cars all along the road, he said.

Pima County Sheriff's Department deputies were at the scene interviewing the driver of the SUV, who was cooperating with investigators, said Goldberg, who didn't know if the injured couple were related to a graduating student.

The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. Mountain View High, which is in the Marana Unified School District, is at 3901 W. Linda Vista Blvd.
