 Tucsonan Matt Grevers won gold at the London Olympics this afternoon in the 100-meter backstroke. Former University of Arizona swimmer Nick Thoman earned the silver.

 Grevers swam 52.16 seconds for an Olympic record.  Thoman, from Cincinnati, swam 52.92.

Grevers, a Northwestern grad, who lives and trains here, also earned a silver medal on Sunday by swimming in the preliminaries of the 4x100 relay.

The 27-year-old is an Illinois native.
