ISTANBUL - Tucsonan Matt Grevers won the men's 100-meter backstroke to improve the U.S. tally of gold to six medals Thursday at the short-course world championships.

Grevers of Tucson Ford Aquatics won in 49.89 seconds, barely defeating Stanislav Donets of Russia, who finished in 49.91 in the next lane. Grevers won Olympic gold in the same event. Guilherme Guido of Brazil took bronze in 50.50.

"He is definitely the king of the short course, and I am the king of the long course," Grevers said of Donets. "The underwater skills of the Russian are incredible. Luckily, I could catch up with the swimming."
