The University of Arizona softball team proved its Saturday home win over Alabama was no fluke by repeating the trick Sunday.

The 24th-ranked Wildcats, who blanked the Crimson Tide 3-0 on Saturday, routed the SEC team 8-0 in five innings — the first time in three years Alabama has lost a game via the mercy rule.

UA jumped in front quickly on Sunday when Mo Mercado belted a grand slam in the first inning.

Chelsea Goodacre and Katiyana Mauga then worked bases-loaded walks in the second to give Arizona a 6-0 lead. The Wildcats would go on to draw eight bases on balls from Alabama pitchers.

Mercado and Lauren Young each drove in runs in the fourth inning to wrap up the scoring.

Shelby Babcock (2-0) earned the win with five scoreless innings. She allowed two hits and struck out seven.

The Wildcats (9-0) followed up the win with another shutout, topping Grand Canyon 5-0 to put the wraps on a perfect weekend at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

Against Grand Canyon, Nancy Bowling struck out a career-high 13 — the highest total for a UA hurler since Kenzie Fowler struck out 15 in 2011.

Bowling allowed seven hits, but none went for extra bases.

Kellie Fox hit her fifth homer of the year, while Mauga added her second. Mauga’s blast opened up the scoring in the second inning, while Fox’s two-run round-tripper staked UA to a 4-0 lead in the third.

Mauga, Courtney Rodriguez and Kelsey Rodriguez all had two hits for the Wildcats.

UA will play five games at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., this week, including contests against No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 14 Missouri on Thursday, the first day of the event.

The Wildcats have outscored opponents 74-3 and hit 17 homers this year, to go along with a .408 batting average and a team ERA of 0.41.
