Sunnyside High School grad Estela Piñon scattered five hits and struck out five to lead the Arizona Wildcats to a 10-2 five-inning victory over Penn State on Friday at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
In its second game, No. 19 Arizona (20-7) fell to No. 14 Michigan 9-1 in six innings.
The Wildcats will wrap up play against No. 1 Oklahoma today at 3 p.m.
Piñon, who improved to 7-2, had a shutout until Penn State scored twice in the fifth. The Cats gave Piñon an early 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three in the second.
In the first, three Cats walked before Mandie Perez hit a two-run single. In the second, Hallie Wilson homered and Chelsea Goodacre added a two-run blast to help make it 5-0.
Goodacre finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
Against Michigan, UA starter Nancy Bowling (4-2) picked up the loss after giving up four earned runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Shelby Babcock relieved Bowling with two outs in the fourth, but she gave up five runs - two earned - and five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Lauren Young groundout that scored Chelsea Suitos, who had singled.
Bowling kept the Wolverines at bay until the fourth when they took a 4-0 lead.
Lyndsay Doyle led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Sierra Romero followed with a home run, and Bowling issued a walk before Amy Knapp tripled, Caitlin Blanchard doubled in the fourth run before Babcock came in and got the third out on a groundout.
Michigan (20-7) scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
