Before Friday’s Dave Murray Invitational, Lawi Lalang had never run in a cross-country event.

Heck, he’d never even witnessed one.

Back home in Kenya, he said, distance competitions came on streets, in circles, sharing more with NASCAR than a 4.25-mile run through Del Urich Golf Course.

Yet Lalang not only won Friday’s meet, but set a course record with a time of 20:06.

His next-closest competitor finished a stunning 54 seconds later.

“It’s amazing what he did, running solo,” UA coach James Li said. “It’s very, very hard to do. It’s so much nicer to have someone to run with.”
