Cycling will be celebrated throughout Tucson in all its forms in the coming month, but only once can fans catch pros racing at 35 mph around the streets of downtown.

The second Old Pueblo Grand Prix will feature cyclists of varying age groups doing laps around a six-tenths-of-a-mile loop throughout Saturday. All the action is visible and free for spectators and includes $20,000 in prize money.

Race promoters say the spectator event shows what cycling is about. “Everyone does (cycling) as a kid, or almost everyone, so there’s a little but of it that gets downplayed as it’s seen as a kid’s sport,” race promoter Kurt Rosenquist said. “When you really see pro athletes going at it with this intensity at 35 miles per hour, it’s technical and physical. You get that it’s a serious, committed, mature sport. “It’s nonstop action.”
