The state championship track meet is still several weeks away, but for three days this week we'll get a good preview of what might happen this May at Mesa Community College.

The UA-hosted Willie Williams Classic, which starts Thursday at Drachman Stadium, is one of the biggest meets of the year and puts track center stage this week while there will also be a couple of other tournaments to watch.

Here's a look at what's going on around town this week:

Wednesday-Saturday

Softball: A dozen area teams will take over Cherry Field for three days as part of the Badger Invitational.

Sierra Vista Buena beat Desert View in the championship of the tournament last year. Both will be back in it this year, along with Catalina Foothills, Cholla, Flowing Wells, Marana, Nogales, Palo Verde, Pueblo, Rincon/University, Santa Rita and host Tucson.

Friday-Saturday

Boys volleyball: Catalina Foothills will host 14 teams in the Falcon Invitational, starting at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The event is made up of three five-team pools, and the first day will consist of pool play until 8 p.m. Friday .

The top three teams from each pool advance to Saturday's bracket play, which begins at 9 a.m. The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The 11 local teams are the host Falcons, Catalina, Mountain View, Sabino, Ironwood Ridge, Cienega, Rincon, Canyon del Oro, Tucson, Palo Verde and Sunnyside.

Thursday-Saturday

Track and field: Several potential individual state champions will be in action at the Willie Williams Classic, which begins at 3 p.m., Thursday.

Action starts back up Friday at 10 a.m. and will conclude with the Dave Murray Distance Carnival, starting at 6 p.m., which mostly features college events.

Saturday's events are all finals but are mixed between college and high school. The girls 200 meters starts the day at 10 a.m., and the men's 1,600-meter relay concludes it at 2:50 p.m.
