OMAHA, Neb. — The odds of making the U.S. Olympic swimming team are somewhere between distant and remote. Of the 1,849 swimmers here this week, about 46 will be in London for the 2012 Olympics. Maybe as few as 42.

“We had about 1,200 swimmers here in 2008,” said former Arizona Wildcats coach Frank Busch, now director of USA Swimming’s national teams. “We’ve had to create 10 lanes for (this morning’s) preliminaries instead of the customary eight. It’s like nothing we’ve ever experienced.”

The competition is so strong that UA and Flowing Wells High School grad Marcus Titus is one of just 144 entered in the 200-meter breast stroke. Two will make it to London.

And it’s not like there’s a dog in the field. The split from No. 1 to No. 144 is 4.61 seconds.
