Arizona Wildcats high jumper Brigetta Barrett had the meet of her life this afternoon in London.
She jumped 6 feet 8 inches for the silver medal in her first Olympic Games. The height was a personal record.
Russian Anna Chicherova won and teammate Svetlana Shkolina earned bronze.
Barrett, a senior-to-be, is the first person in NCAA history to sweep the outdoor and indoor high-jump national championships in consecutive years.
The theater major was born in New York but attended high school in Texas.
She jumped 6 feet 4 inches on Thursday to qualify.
Captured on the NBC Olympics live video feed, Barrett fell to the ground and shed tears of joy after missing her final jump of 6 feet 8 3/4 inches, which awarded the gold to Chicherova.
When she arose, she took an American flag from the crowd.
Speaking to the camera, she said hello to her mother, Lottie M. Barrett, as well as the University of Arizona.
Barrett has said she intends to return to the UA for her senior season.
