Hunter Mahan won the WGC Match Play Championship in 2012, but he doesn't want to be known as the defending champion.

"There's no defending here," he said today. "It's just trying to win this week and trying to beat the guys that are going to play in front of you."

It's a new year indeed.

Mahan was one of several golfers to get in some practice at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain this morning in advance of Wednesday's first round matches.

The 30-year-old American met with the media today to discuss his title defense. He opens play as the No. 6 seed in the Gary Player bracket and will face Italy's Matteo Manassero in the first round at 8:35 a.m..

Justin Rose of England, a two seed, also spoke with reporters. Rose opens against K.J. Choi at 8:45 a.m.

Louis Oosthuizen, the No. 1 seed in the Ben Hogan bracket, is expected to speak with reporters this afternoon.
