Military appreciation

Friday's second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship started with a bang - a flyover conducted by two A-10 Thunderbolts. As part of Military Appreciation Day, the tournament held a 10:15 a.m. ceremony, complete with the National Anthem, a color guard and the flyover.

Sgt. First Class Michael List, who is part of the 285th attack helicopter battalion, was one of about 20 Army and Air Force personnel who greeted the golfers Friday morning.

"We're so thankful for all they do for the military," said List, who wore desert camouflage.

The PGA offered free admission to active, reserve and military retirees and their dependents, as well as giving them admission to the Birdies for the Brave Outpost. Tickets are available with valid military IDs at the main entrance gate.

Quotable

"You know, losing sucks, and it's very disappointing."

State of the Game

We were invited to watch a few minutes of Golf Channel's annual "State of the Game" as it was taped around 6 Friday night.

Johnny Miller, Nick Faldo, Roger Maltbie, Brandel Chamblee and UA alum Dan Hicks gathered to discuss major issues, from belly putters and Rory McIlroy's new equipment to all things Tiger Woods.

Succulents dotted the set, which had the players' clubhouse in the distance. It was one of three distinct sets used by the channel. "SOTG" is a special annual show that combines Golf Channel and NBC workers, and is one of the few that features Faldo and Miller together. About 20 crew members helped film the show, which aired at 8:30 p.m.

Outfit of the day

The nattily-attired Ian Poulter wore a V-neck, argyle pattern purple, pink and red sweater in his match against Bo Van Pelt on Friday. He wore matching purple pants, deeper than eggplant. The best part of the Brit's outfit, though, were his bright red shoes. They matched his sweater.

Tweet of the Day

"Everyone @ScottPiercyPGA is on twitter! Not sure if he is funny or what he does but whatever!! #urwelcome."

Another quotable

"It was not better here Wednesday than in Germany. But in general it's 70 degrees. That's the average temperature here. Usually it's nicer here."
