Gentry Hicks stood with his Canyon del Oro teammates in near darkness at Randolph North after his final round of high school golf and talked about his finish.
"On the 17th green, I had about a 50-foot putt for birdie and I let it go. It went in and I did one of these," Hicks said as he imitated a Tiger Woods like fist-pump.
Hicks followed his birdie on No. 17 with another one at No. 18 for a 70 to claim the Division II state championship with a 141 total.
He held off teammate Jaime Waltmire (143) and Catalina Foothills' Dylan Kornberg (144).
"I'm in a state of euphoria right now," Hicks said shortly after his round. "It's tough to put into words."
The final two groups, which included the top three individual finishers, concluded around 5:45 p.m., using nearly every ounce of daylight.
In the end, Hicks and the Dorados claimed the state team title as well, holding off Catalina Foothills by 13 strokes (581-594). It was a reverse from last year when the Falcons won and the Dorados were the runners-up.
"We'll probably do this dance again next year," CDO coach John Farbarik said. "Last year when they won, I told our guys to stand there and watch them get their trophy. I wanted it to be us this year - and it was."
Anthony Quezada (146) of Glendale Independence was fourth. Foothills' Scott Morrison (147) was fifth.
Division I
Sierra Vista Buena's Colin McCarty followed his opening-round 65 with a 71 to claim the individual title.
"I never saw this coming," McCarty said. "I just wanted to come here and play solid golf and give myself a chance.
"I guess I did a little more than that."
Ricky Lee of Salpointe Catholic opened his final round on fire, shooting a 29 on the front nine. He finished at 67 to take third with a two-day score of 139. He tied Cody McManus of Phoenix Desert Vista, but lost on a scorecard playoff.
Mesa Red Mountain won the team title with a score of 569. Ironwood Ridge (seventh place, 595) had the best Southern Arizona finish.
The Nighthawks were paced by Kevin Goldstein, who shot a 72-72 to finish at 144.
