The Bowl Championship Series could learn something from me. Or at least my annual Holiday Bowl Challenge.
Under the Ryan Finley Holiday Bowl Challenge System (RFHBCS), champions are crowned and losers sent home. There are no power points, coaches' polls or strength-of-schedule ratings to consider.
This is the fourth year I've challenged Star readers to pick every bowl game and, if they can, beat me.
The formula is simple: Pick the winner of every bowl game, with no point spread, on the Star's Web site.
The winners of the local contest receive a signed copy of Greg Hansen's new book, "Hustling to beat deadline." National winners will receive FatHead wall art and sports watches.
You have better odds of beating me than Boise State does of winning the national championship.
More than 60 readers handed me my, um, notebook, the first time we played in 2006. Last year, that number was down to three.
Moms have been the midmajors in the RFHBCS; my own mother has beaten me twice in the last three years.
So, really, everybody has a chance. I'll even take the underdog in the national championship game.
See you at the victory parade!
Non-BCS bowl games (1 point)
Who: Fresno State vs. Wyoming
Ryan's pick: Fresno State. Bulldogs struggled in last year's New Mexico Bowl; they'll roll this time.
Who: Rutgers vs. Central Florida
Ryan's pick: Rutgers. Remember: People from New Jersey love Florida.
Who: Southern Miss vs. Middle Tennessee State
Ryan's pick: Southern Miss. No school with the name "middle" in it can ever be tops at anything.
Who: Oregon State vs. BYU
Ryan's pick: Oregon State. BYU struggled with Arizona's speed in last year's Las Vegas Bowl; the Cougars won't be able to catch the Rodgers brothers.
Who: Cal vs. Utah
Ryan's pick: Utah. A typical "who wants it more" game.
Who: Nevada vs. SMU
Ryan's pick: Nevada. June Jones' return to the islands could get uglier than a "Dog the Bounty Hunter" episode.
Who: Marshall vs. Ohio
Ryan's pick: Ohio. And yes, we'll take the Bobcats with extra Crazy Bread.
Who: North Carolina vs. Pitt
Ryan's pick: Pitt. Panthers are the best sneak-good team in America.
Who: Boston College vs. USC
Ryan's pick: USC. Trojans have too much talent, even in a down year, to lose to a mediocre Eagles team.
Who: Clemson vs. Kentucky
Ryan's pick: Clemson. Running back C.J. Spiller is the nation's best running back not named Gerhart or Ingram.
Who: Texas A&M vs. Georgia
Ryan's pick: Georgia. Bulldogs own the South.
Who: Miami vs. Wisconsin
Ryan's pick: Miami. Because we liked "The U" on ESPN, that's why.
Who: Temple vs. UCLA
Ryan's pick: Temple by a basket. This is an early 1990s basketball game, right?
Who: Bowling Green vs. Idaho
Ryan's pick: Bowling Green. And receiver Freddie Barnes will smash the NCAA's career catch record.
Who: Arizona vs. Nebraska
Ryan's pick: Arizona. A rematch of the 1998 Holiday Bowl has a predictable ending.
Who: Houston vs. Air Force
Ryan's pick: Houston. QB Case Keenum will go out on top.
Who: Missouri vs. Navy
Ryan's pick: Navy. In the biggest upset of the bowl season.
Who: Oklahoma vs. Stanford
Ryan's pick: Oklahoma. Sooners have the front-seven to stuff Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart.
Who: Iowa State vs. Minnesota
Ryan's pick: Minnesota. Though the Gophers have lost their last two trips to the Insight Bowl, in 2006 and 2008.
Who: Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee
Ryan's pick: Virginia Tech. Hokies are turkeys, and turkeys are related - sort of - to chickens. VaTech will be right at home in the only bowl named after a fast-food chain.
Who: Northwestern vs. Auburn
Ryan's pick: Auburn. Though foodies will tell you Outback might as well be a fast-food chain.
Who: Penn State vs. LSU
Ryan's pick: LSU. Tigers have won their last four bowl games by a combined score of 157-44.
Who: Florida State vs. West Virginia
Ryan's pick: Florida State. Seminoles will dig deep to send Bobby Bowden into retirement with a win.
Who: South Florida vs. Northern Illinois
Ryan's pick: South Florida. Tune in to check out Bulls QB B.J. Daniels, my favorite Division I player.
Who: Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss
Ryan's pick: Oklahoma State. Cowboys always play well in Texas.
Who: UConn vs. South Carolina
Ryan's pick: UConn. Notre Dame went after Huskies coach Randy Edsall for a reason: Dude can coach.
Who: Arkansas vs. East Carolina
Ryan's pick: Arkansas. ECU's mid-major magic will only take the Pirates so far.
Who: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech
Ryan's pick: Texas Tech. We'll take Mike Leach in a big game any day.
Who: Central Michigan vs. Troy
Ryan's pick: Central Michigan. Chippewas are 11-1 since losing to Arizona on Sept. 5; during that span, they've outscored their opponents 425-205.

Who: Oregon vs. Ohio State
Ryan's pick: Oregon. The Big Ten hasn't won a Rose Bowl since 2000, and - guess what? - it's not happening this year either.
Who: Cincinnati vs. Florida
Ryan's pick: Cincinnati. Bearcats have been waiting all season for a game like this.
Who: Boise State vs. TCU
Ryan's pick: TCU. Horned Frogs have the nation's top-ranked defense and a chip on their shoulder.
Who: Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
Ryan's pick: Georgia Tech. Yellow Jackets will redeem themselves following last year's 38-3 loss to LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Who: Alabama vs. Texas
Ryan's pick: Texas. Hey, why not?
