Mike Stoops will make $1 million this year — and more in each subsequent year through 2013 — under a proposed contract extension pending approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.

Terms of Stoops' extension, released Wednesday by the Board of Regents, mark a raise of more than $300,000 per year over his current deal. The Board of Regents will vote on the football coach's new contract when it meets on campus next week; the deal must be approved before it can become official.

Stoops' new contract calls for him to make $1 million — a $500,000 base salary plus $500,000 in what the board deems "peripheral and other duties" — for the 2009 season.

Stoops will make $1.1million in 2010, $1.2million in 2011, $1.3million in 2012 and $1.4million in 2013.

The coach can make more money based on attendance, academic and on-field performance bonuses.

Stoops' contract can be bought out for half of the remaining salary due to him; the coach must pay the UA $250,000 should he decide to leave for another job.

UA athletic director Jim Livengood promised Stoops an extension Dec. 23, days after the Arizona Wildcats defeated BYU 31-21 in the Las Vegas Bowl. The UA finished 8-5, its best record in a decade.

The Board of Regents revealed the terms of the new deal Wednesday when it posted the agenda for its upcoming meeting on its Web site.

Stoops' new deal is richer than his last contract, signed when he was hired in 2003 and renewed without a raise in 2006. The coach made $385,288 per year in base salary plus $300,000 for peripheral duties, notably a coaches' show and other media responsibilities.

Stoops, 47, is 25-34 in five seasons as the Wildcats' coach.
