"San Antonio Girl"
• Artist: Lyle Lovett (2001)
• Why: Julia Roberts' clever ex-husband runs through some of the most touristy parts of the city: "She said the Alamo/Was someplace we could go/Or to the Hemisfair/to ride the needle there."
"Deep in the Heart of Texas"
• Artist: Everyone from Perry Como to Gene Autry to Ray Charles (first in 1941)
• Why: Blame "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." To convince a friend via phone that he's in San Antonio, Pee-wee simply sings "The stars at night are big and bright …" and waits for locals to finish the sentence.
"San Antonio Stroll"
• Artist: Tanya Tucker (1975)
• Why: It's poppy, dated and nowhere near as authentic to the city as Tejano or other South Texas genres. But it was huge - Tucker's fifth No. 1 single.
"New San Antonio Rose"
• Artist: Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys (1938)
• Why: Texas Monthly ranked it the second-greatest Texas song ever. It's the most popular song written by the king of Western swing.
"China Grove"
• Artist: Doobie Brothers (1973)
• Why: China Grove is a real place - a suburb of San Antonio - but not, as the song hints, a Chinese enclave. The town is fewer than 2,000 people.
