Former Arizona Wildcats wide receiver Delashaun Dean pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Tucson City Court to a misdemeanor weapons charge, the result of an arrest this month.

Dean was arraigned in judge Michael Pollard's court at 8:30 a.m. He will return to court Aug. 4 with a lawyer. Dean, 21, said he was hoping to settle his case quickly. Many first-time misdemeanor offenders are offered diversion and a $200 fine by the court; Dean was not.

"I was hoping for it to be over today," he said. "I was definitely hoping for (diversion), but I think that offer will be on the table next time, or hopefully, they'll drop" the charge.

Wearing a white dress shirt and jeans, Dean spoke quietly when asked for his plea. He spent the rest of the 90-minute meeting sitting alone in the third row of Court 2. Dean was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon early in the morning of June 19.

Tucson Police Department officers were called to an IHOP Restaurant on North Oracle Road at about 2:40 a.m. after a patron reported seeing Dean flash a gun in his waistband.

Dean was frisked for weapons, according to reports, but officers found nothing. Shortly thereafter, officers found two semiautomatic handguns underneath Dean's car, a late-model Chrysler 300, according to reports.

Dean's case will have no bearing on his future at Arizona. Suspended by coach Mike Stoops a week ago, Dean has decided to transfer to Texas A&M-Kingsville. Dean said he hopes to leave for Texas on Monday.
