Arizona Wildcats linebacker Jake Fischer needs surgery to fix a torn ACL in his right knee, and will likely miss the start of the 2011 season.

The UA announced the pending surgery this morning, four days after Fischer suffered an injury during the final minutes of the team’s annual spring game. Fischer will undergo surgery some time in the next week,  and could be out as long as seven months.

“It’s unfortunate that it happened in the last few minutes of spring ball,” coach Mike Stoops said, “but we’ll be OK.”

Fischer is the third UA player to suffer a torn ACL this spring. Starting safety Adam Hall and backup tailback Greg Nwoko both underwent surgery two weeks ago and are questionable to start the season with the team.

The loss of Fischer, the Wildcats' starting strongside linebacker and a former Ironwood Ridge High School star, is an even bigger blow. Fischer finished with 58 tackles, 7 1/2 tackles for loss and two sacks a year ago. Coaches will likely turn to incoming freshmen Rob Hankins, Hank Hobson or Domonique Petties to take Fischer’s place. The UA could also play more nickel, leaving them with only two linebacker spots to fill.

The Wildcats open training camp in early August.
