Arizona Wildcats running back Ka'Deem Carey pleaded not guilty Thursday to misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident involving his pregnant ex-girlfriend in December.
Carey was arraigned in Tucson City Court at 9:30 a.m. He will return to court Feb. 6 for a pretrial hearing.
The charges followed an order of protection requested by the woman against Carey on Dec. 26. He was served with the order on Dec. 31.
In the petition, the 23-year-old woman wrote that Carey entered her room on Dec. 23 looking for a lighter to smoke an illegal substance. She told police that she asked Carey to leave several times, but he refused and shoved his way into the room, knocked her to the floor and slammed her fingers in the door.
The Star is not naming the woman because she is not being charged.
Both Carey and his attorney declined comment Thursday morning as they left court. Carey wore a black shirt and black slacks with a pink tie and was accompanied by his parents.
UA officials released a statement earlier this month and said they are "fully aware of the situation," but they are not expected to comment again until the case is resolved.
Carey, a Tucson native and former Canyon del Oro High School star, was named a consensus first-team All-American as a sophomore. He led the nation in rushing yards with 1,929 and set school records for yards and rushing TDs.
