Wash. St. hangs on for win over UNLV

LAS VEGAS - Backup quarterback Connor Halliday threw four first-half touchdown passes to help Washington State beat UNLV 35-27 on Friday night.

Starting in place of the injured Jeff Tuel, Halliday threw two touchdown passes to Marquess Wilson, and also teamed with Gabe Marks and Isiah Myers on first-half scoring strikes.

Halliday completed 26 of 45 passes for 378 yards and had two interceptions.

Washington State (2-1) held off UNLV (0-3) after the Rebels regained possession with 40 seconds left in the game. UNLV was unable to advance past the Washington State 42.

Marks led the Cougars with six catches for 126 yards, and Wilson had five receptions for 110 yards.

Nick Sherry completed 33 of 49 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns for UNLV. He also threw an interception.

Marcus Sullivan had six catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Illinois quarterback likely to miss 2nd straight game

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase will miss his second straight game today with a sprained ankle.

The school confirmed Friday that Scheelhaase, who sprained his left ankle during the season-opening win against Western Michigan, isn't expected to play in today's home game against Charleston Southern. Sophomore Reilly O'Toole will start for a second straight week for Illinois (1-1).

The Illini struggled last week struggled to put points on the board without Scheelhaase in a 45-14 loss at Arizona State. O'Toole and Miles Osei split time at quarterback in that game.

Scheelhaase had practiced earlier in the week and said that he expected to play.

Charleston Southern (0-2) is a Football Championship Subdivision School.
