Arizona Wildcats swim coach Eric Hansen resigned Monday, nearly three months after taking a leave of absence from the program.

Hansen said in a news release that he wants to pursue other interests.

The UA will conduct a national search to find Hansen's permanent replacement, athletic director Greg Byrne said in a news release. Longtime assistant Rick Demont will continue to run the program in Hansen's absence.

Hansen was hired away from Wisconsin in 2011 to replace Frank Busch, who won multiple national titles during his decades-long tenure in Tucson. Hansen seemed a natural fit: He was a former UA assistant, having served under Busch from 1996-99 before returning as head coach.

Hansen said in a news release that, after taking leave in October, "I came to the decision that it would be best for me to step down and pursue other interests. I want to thank athletics director Greg Byrne and the current athletic administration for the opportunity I was given.”
