How will Wildcats' state of mind be for USC?

Would it have been an advantage for USC if Arizona had beaten UCLA on Thursday, instead of losing to the Bruins and presumably being more motivated Saturday?

USC interim coach Bob Cantu said it didn’t matter.

“It’s Arizona,” Cantu said. “It’d still be difficult no matter what.

“You can look at it both ways. You also could look at it that if they won, they’re excited or they lost and they’re tight and nervous because they don’t want to lose two in a row. So I don’t necessarily think that means anything.

“Sean (Miller) is a terrific coach and there’s a reason why they’re sixth in the country. They’ve got a top recruiting class and great players, great talent. So we’ve just got to do our best.”

Cantu let the Trojans sleep in a bit after their late-night overtime loss at ASU, then USC drove straight from Phoenix to McKale Center for a short walk-through at the Richard Jefferson Gym before the Wildcats practiced there.

“We wanted to keep it light,” Cantu said. “We played an overtime game, a lot of guys got a lot of minutes, so we felt it was more important to have a walk-through and kind of understand what Arizona’s going to do. I think legs and a fresh mind are more important.”

Center Dewayne Dedmon appeared to agree.

"It’s definitely been good to take a day and recuperate," he said.

What Arizona did exactly is unclear. The Wildcats were scheduled for a normal late-afternoon practice but Miller was not available for comment.

But after Thursday night’s game, Miller indicated the Wildcats needed to move on while using the loss as motivation to improve.

“It’s important that we learn from it and we also put it behind us,” Miller said. “And at 5 o’clock on Saturday, that we take advantage of playing a home game. That’s the challenge for us.”
