Nearly a week before his scheduled official recruiting visit to Arizona, Cochise College big man Matt Korcheck went ahead and decided to commit to the Wildcats.

Korcheck and Cochise coach Jerry Carrillo have not been available for comment tonight. But Chad Groth, a Phoenix-based basketball organizer, said that Korcheck has chosen the Wildcats over Oklahoma, and Korcheck’s Twitter feed includes several responses of appreciation toward people who wished him well for becoming a Wildcat.

Groth came to know Korcheck while the Cochise player became the MVP of his Area Codes Basketball Junior College Showcase last July.

Korcheck also told Scout's Wildcat Authority that he planned to commit to UA on Monday and will sign papers if they are available.

Korcheck visited Arizona unofficially on Thursday and was invited back to campus for an official visit next weekend, Carrillo said last Thursday evening.

Korcheck, who signed with UTEP out of Sabino but never played for the Miners, is seeking to redshirt the 2012-13 season.

A redshirt season “is definitely appropriate for him and he wants to do it,” Carrillo said. “Matt would not come to Arizona if they didn’t commit to a redshirt season.”

Korcheck averaged 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Apaches last season and had been monitored by the UA coaching staff since last fall.

If Korcheck signs, he will be taking the Wildcats’ last available scholarship as of now although more could become available with spring departures. UA is waiting to hear from Duquesne transfer T.J. McConnell, who is expected to decide between UA and Virginia soon.
