News and notes:

--Infielder Everth Cabrera, who has missed the last five games with a stiff back, took batting practice today for the first time since suffering the injury. He also took groundballs. Manager Terry Kennedy said he thought Cabrera could be ready for Friday's game at Salt Lake City. Kennedy said it wasn't ideal to have him come back in cold-weather game, but if he's ready, he'd do it.

--Shortstop Beamer Weems is out of the lineup tonight with a hamstring injury. Kennedy said he wasn't a candidate for the disabled list, but will likely miss a few games. Anthony Contreras is also out after fouling a ball off his leg two games ago. Kennedy said Contreras and Cabrera could likely play in an emergency, since there are no other bench options.

--Rocky Gale, who took Yasmani Grandal's roster spot at catcher, gets his first start tonight. He'll bat ninth and catch Josh Geer. Brad Davis, who has started in Grandal's spot since the injury, will start at designated hitter for the first time this season.

--Kennedy said left-hander Colt Hynes is a candidate to start in Joe Wieland's spot Sunday in Salt Lake City. Hynes has appeared out of the bullpen so far this seaosn, but Kennedy said he'd be most comfortable starting him. He didn't anticipate having a catcher promoted from Double-A to fill Wieland's spot in the rotation.
