Pregame news and notes:

--Pitching prospect Casey Kelly, who started the year with Tucson and was expected to be the team's top starter, is close to rejoining the team after suffering an elbow injury in April. Kelly has thrown two bullpen sessions and will now throw a simulated game this week. Manager Terry Kennedy said he expects him to return in 2-3 weeks if everything goes well.

--Micah Owings was expected to report to Tucson today to start a rehab assignment as a hitter. Owings had scratched trying to come back as a pitcher this season, but was hoping to play some first base and designated hitter with Tucson. Instead, he never reported. Owings was in Peoria to start his rehab and Kennedy believed there was a setback with his elbow. He wasn't sure when or if he would report to Tucson.

--San Diego starter Eric Stults will start for Tucson tonight as he comes back from a lat strain. Stults is expected to throw 60 pitches. Kennedy said he will make one more start after tonight--the second game of the Reno series next week. Kennedy said the next start against Reno is the only other scheduled one for Stults right now.

--Kennedy has set his second-half rotation. Matt Palmer will start tomorrow against Fresno. Jorge Reyes will follow on Sunday and Matt Jackson will start Monday. Colt Hynes is expected to start the series opener against Reno on Tuesday.

--Josh Spence was activated from the disabled list after battling a shoulder strain. Another roster move wasn't needed because the team was one reliever short. Outfielder Blake Tekotte wasn't activated and Kennedy wasn't sure how much longer he'll be sidelined. He thought he was improving and getting closer.
