Even with an injury-shortened season, Jimmy Gehrels proved to be the best boys volleyball player in Southern Arizona this year by far.
The 6-foot 4-inch Pepperdine-bound outside hitter led the team in kills per set with 3.9 ahead of junior Ryan Callaghan who was second with 3.7. Callaghan led the team with 295 total kills and helped give the Lancers one of the top duos in the state.
Salpointe was the team to beat in Southern Arizona and the only local team to make it to the state quarterfinals. Although the Lancers lost 3-0 to Phoenix Desert Vista there, Gehrels, a four-year started, led the team with 13 kills.
Callaghan was also considered for player of the year because of how he took the lead when Gehrels wasn’t on the floor so it looks like Salpointe’s volleyball team might be just as strong next year.
