Even though Wayne Newman was competing at the Division IV level, his marks were among the best in the state.
Newman, who is heading to Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., swept the two hurdle events at the state meet as a junior and went out a triple champion as a senior by defending both hurdles titles and winning the long jump, too.
His mark in the long jump (22 feet, 8¼ inches) at state was the fifth best overall while and his times in the 300-meter hurdles (38.41 seconds) and 110 hurdles (14.52) were also in the top five among the four divisions.
Salpointe Catholic senior Andy Trouard, last year’s boys athlete of the year, was well on his way repeating as a triple state champion before suffering a season-ending injury less than a month before state.
However, Newman did just as good of a job representing Southern Arizona this year as Trouard did last year.
