The Arizona Wildcats' offense scored 10 touchdowns and averaged more than four yards per play in today's spring scrimmage at Glendale Community College. Here are some of the highlights:
Passing: Matt Scott completed 15 of 23 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over.
Rushing: Daniel Jenkins led the Wildcats with 81 rushing yards on nine carries; he also scored two touchdowns. Ka’Deem Carey (9 carries, 30 yards) and Kylan Butler (9 carries, 29 yards, 2 touchdowns) both averaged about 3 yards per carry.
Receiving: Tyler Slavin led all receivers with five catches for 57 yards. It could have been more: His 50-yard touchdown catch from Scott was called back because of holding. Austin Hill caught 5 passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns, and walk-on Johnny Jackson grabbed four passes for 26 yards.
Defense: Safety Jared Tevis had an interception, but slipped and fell on his way to a sure touchdown. Derrick Rainey started at cornerback for the rehabbing Jonathan McKnight, and played well.
Special teams: Walk-on Jake Smith has inserted himself into the competition at placekicker. The former Syracuse and Youngstown State player split time with John Bonano on PATs.
