The Arizona Wildcats will debut new, red helmets when they take on rival Arizona State in Friday’s Territorial Cup game.
The UA unveiled the cardinal lids with a tweeted photo tonight, one night after the Wildcats (7-4 overall, 4-4 Pac-12) defeated Utah 34-24 in Salt Lake City. Minutes later, the Wildcats football team's official twitter account posted this picture of quarterback Matt Scott with the new helmet.
Athletic director Greg Byrne told the Star tonight that the red helmets will coincide with a “red out” at Arizona Stadium; the UA bookstore will begin selling red-helmet-themed t-shirts Monday.
Byrne said it’s “to be determined” whether the red lids will become a regular part of Arizona’s uniform rotation.
“We haven’t gotten that far with it yet,” he said. “I anticipate this being something we would use again.”
Arizona wore red helmets from 1968-71, and again from 1977-80. The team has since worn white and navy, with the exception of one game this season — against Oregon State — when the team debuted copper helmets to honor the state’s mining heritage. The UA is expected to wear all-new jerseys and pants starting in 2013; the uniforms were one of first-year coach Rich Rodriguez's early concerns when he took over a year ago.
