The Arizona Wildcats have named Charlie Ragle their new tight ends coach after Spencer Leftwich announced his departure today.

Ragle spent the 2012 season as Arizona’s assistant director of operations and staff liaison to in-state high schools. Before that, he was a successful coach at Scottsdale Chaparral High School: Ragle’s teams went 63-7 and won three state championships during his five years (2007-11) in charge.

It’s the first collegiate on-field coaching job for Ragle, who served as a graduate assistant at Arizona State in 2006.

Leftwich is leaving for “a position within the Division I coaching ranks,” according to a UA release. He is expected to join UTEP’s coaching staff. Leftwich is a Texas native; his son, Mack, is one of the Miners’ top incoming freshmen.

Leftwich said in a release that he’s “so grateful and appreciative to Rich Rodriguez for giving me the opportunity to work with him and our staff at Arizona.”

“This is an opportunity to get my whole family together that I couldn’t pass up,” he said.

Leftwich coached in the Lone Star State from 1989-91, 1994-2002 and 2007-09. Leftwich joined the UA last fall from Pitt, where he worked  alongside current UA aides Tony Dews, Tony Gibson and Calvin Magee.

To replace Ragle, the UA promoted Billy Kirelawich to assistant director of operations. Kirelawich, the son of defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich, served in an administrative role this fall.
