Arizona Wildcats football: Top recruiting target passes on Cats for Big Ten

A forgettable 2011 came to an end Saturday night with predictable news: another Arizona Wildcats recruiting target will play somewhere else.

Cody Sokol, a quarterback from Scottsdale Community College and one of the west's top remaining available prospects, said late Saturday that he'll attend Iowa.

Sokol made his announcement via Twitter, writing: "Happy to be a HAWKEYE." He chose the Big Ten school over offers from Arizona, Cincinnati and Florida International.

Arizona coaches pursued Sokol, an Iowa native who played at Phoenix's Desert Vista High School, mostly for roster depth heading into spring drills. The Wildcats have just one quarterback, Matt Scott, on the roster. A pair of incoming freshmen, Josh Kern and Nate Sudfeld, are expected — for now — to enroll in the summer. Sudfeld is rethinking his recruitment with one month left before national letter-of-intent day. Sokol's decision to attend Iowa may actually help Arizona's cause with Sudfeld: He was considering the Hawkeyes.

Sokol led the Western States football league with 3,807 passing yards and 43 touchdowns as a sophomore this fall. Arizona hosted him on an official visit last month.

Sokol is the second high-profile recruit to choose another school over Arizona via twitter this week. Tight end Taylor McNamara picked Oklahoma over the UA on Wednesday.
