Salpointe Catholic junior standout Cameron Denson committed to Rich Rodriguez and the Arizona Wildcats this afternoon.
Salpointe coach Dennis Bene said Denson committed in Rodriguez's office around 4:30 p.m., today.
"The coaches were there, his parents were there, it was a very neat moment," Bene said. "He's a hometown kid and he wanted to play for the UA."
It's a huge get for the Wildcats program.
Denson is rated as the 8th best receiver in the 2014 class by Scout.com recruiting service. He's a four-star recruit, who played quarterback, receiver and defensive back for the Lancers as a junior.
Denson held offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah and Washington.
The 6-foot-1-inch, 175-pound athlete was a Daily Star first-team All-Southern Arizona pick and had more than 2,000 yards of total offense. He had 23 total touchdowns.
After beginning the season at wide receiver, Denson moved to quarterback after starter Andrew Cota suffered an injury. He excelled there, running the spread offense for the Lancers and had 18 rushing scores in six games as the starter.
Bene said he envisions Denson as a slot receiver for the Wildcats and as a player who can have an impact on special teams as a returner.
