Sabino's Matt Bushman used the second game of the Martin Luther King Classic Monday at McKale Center as a coming out party.

The sophomore post player, who has been solid for the Sabercats all season long, had another big game Monday scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in Sabino's 51-49 win over Catalina.

"He's playing great for just a sophomore," Sabino coach Gary Malis said. "He does a lot for us and is really invaluable. Sometimes you forget he's so young and that he's going to keep getting better."

Bushman and the Sabercats raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but saw the Trojans chip away at the lead the whole game.

Catalina eventually closed it to two points and had a chance to win the game in regulation or push it to overtime on its final possession. Instead, a desperation three-pointer fell short and Sabino collected the rebound and the win.

"The bright spot is that we got to play a close game and maybe learned how to finish one out," Malis said. "But, I obviously still would have preferred it not to be that way."

• Nogales 69, Rincon/ University 57: Nogales outlasted the Rangers with a late run including a pair of baskets from Cesar Solis and a deep three-pointer from Joseph Monreal.

The defending 4A-I state champions outscored Rincon in the second half as Solis led the team with 17 points and Monreal had four three-pointers on his way to finishing with 14 points.

"It felt like state all over again," Monreal said.

Rincon's Asha Espirit scored a game-high 22 points.

• Mountain View 49, Tucson 33: The Mountain Lions rallied from being down early and scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to beat Tucson.

Mountain View senior guard Abdul Hameed, who scored a game-high 20 points - eight of which came in the fourth - said it all came down to heart and defense that limited the Badgers to eight points in the final frame.

"The defense was getting us those steals and easy transition points," Hameed said. "It all starts with the heart, it was there in the first and second quarter but not like it was in the fourth."

Senior center Zack Carter added 14 points for the Mountain Lions.

• Green Fields Country Day 46, Fort Thomas 35: Junior Olivia Snyder scored a game-high 28 points and the Griffins rolled in the opening game of the day.

Snyder and the Griffins held Fort Thomas scoreless in the first quarter, leading 13-0 heading into the second quarter.

Fort Thomas made a run in the third, but never got closer than nine points.

Senior Maya Holzman had 12 points in the win.

"We didn't score today like we usually do, but we played defense and got the win," coach Tom Danehy said. "I'm going to enjoy this one."

Green Fields improved to 8-0 in nontournament games.

• Sahuaro 24, Ironwood Ridge 21: Junior guard Chelsea Hunsaker scored four points in the final 1:30 to lift the Cougars over Ironwood Ridge.

"The team just put it together and meshed to get me open," Hunsaker said.

Taylor McNamara sank the first free throw of a one-and-one to take the lead with 19.9 seconds remaining and Hunsaker sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 3.2 seconds left.

"It was really cool to play at McKale and winning helps us a lot with power points," Hunsaker said.
