GLENDALE - Flowing Wells didn't make a single field goal in the fourth quarter Thursday at Jobing.com Arena, but when the final buzzer sounded, the celebration was on.
The sixth-seeded Caballeros went 10 for 13 from the foul line in the final eight minutes to hold off three-time defending state champion Chandler Seton Catholic 41-34 for their 15th straight win and a spot in the Division II state championship game.
"They were down so we knew we were going to have to go to the line to make some free throws and continue to play defense," Flowing Wells coach Michael Perkins said.
Flowing Wells (29-4) will face No. 8 Scottsdale Saguaro at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday at 10 a.m. with hopes of bringing home its first title since 2008, the last time the Caballeros went to the state finals.
Flowing Wells' speedy defense came through again Thursday, forcing 28 turnovers and holding its 11th straight opponent to under 40 points. Junior Mikaela Cook led the team with five steals.
Senior Lyndsay Leikem, an Indiana commit, finished with a game-high 20 points, 10 of which came in the second quarter when Flowing Wells outscored the No. 2 Sentinels 14-2 to take a 23-12 lead at halftime after trailing 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The lead changed seven times in the first 11 minutes, but after Leikem sank a jumper from the left side with 5:24 left in the first half, Flowing Wells never trailed again and led by as much as 13.
Leikem knew the Caballeros were in for a battle. "We just had to keep our composure and stay focused," Leikem said.
Sophomore point guard Kyra Brinsfield made the Caballeros' only three field goals in the second half and finished with eight points.
"After all the hard work we put on at the gym it's finally paying off," Brinsfield said.
It's the first time going to the state championship for everyone on the team but Leikem. She went her freshman and sophomore year with Phoenix St. Mary's before transferring to Flowing Wells.
"I just wanted to win for my teammates and let them experience something that I've personally experienced, and I want them to experience as well," Leikem said.
