Arizona basketball assistant Joe Pasternack has been elevated to associate head coach under Sean Miller, the school said Monday.
Pasternack, who has already been a head coach at the University of New Orleans, effectively assumes the role vacated by James Whitford, who left UA in April to become the head coach at Ball State.
Pasternack earned $204,000 as an assistant coach last season, the same amount that new assistant coach Damon Stoudamire was hired at. It is not immediately clear what Pasternack's salary will be next season, but Whitford earned $215,000.
"Joe has done an outstanding job in his two years with us," Miller said in a UA statement. "His combination of prior head coaching experience at the University of New Orleans and eight years on staff at the University of California has been invaluable to our program's continued development.
"His professionalism, tireless work ethic and total command of all aspects of Arizona basketball position him to become a head coach again very soon."
Pasternack, 35, joined the UA staff in May 2011, when New Orleans considered downgrading from Division I to Division II (the program decided last year to remain in Division I).
He also coached at California for eight seasons as an aide and assistant under then-head coach Ben Braun.
