The Tucson Padres opened their 2013 season with a 9-5 loss at Salt Lake on Thursday night.

Salt Lake broke a 4-4 tie with five runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Padres self-destructed.

Tommy Layne walked in Chris Snyder with the bases loaded to put the Bees up 5-4, and three Salt Lake runners then scored on an error by center fielder Daniel Robertson to make it 8-4.

Jaff Dacker, Rene Rivera and Gregorio Petit all homered for Tucson, which got all its runs from the long ball.

Rivera's homer was a three-run blast in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 4.

Rivera and Petit each went 3 for 4, combining for six of the Padres' nine hits.

Brad Boxberger (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs - one earned - in 1 2/3 innings.

Tim Stauffer started for the Padres and allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings.

The teams meet again at 5:35 p.m. today. Tucson's first home game is against Fresno at 7:05 p.m. next Friday at Kino Stadium.

All Tucson games can be heard on 1290-AM.
