Arizona’s Andy Lopez has been named Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s national coach of the year for his efforts in leading the Wildcats to their first NCAA championship since 1986.
The award is the third for Lopez, who was previously honored in 1992 and 1996.
Under Lopez’s leadership, the Wildcats won all 10 of their postesason games. The team went 5-0 in the College World Series; in fact, it never trailed in Omaha. Arizona won its final 11 games and 18 of its last 20.
The Tucson-based Collegiate Baseball has been honoring coaches since 1980, with Arizona’s Jerry Kindall taking the first-ever award.
