The Arizona Wildcats baseball team’s new home is one of the Southwest’s baseball cathedrals, so the stained glass window inside coach Andy Lopez’s office makes perfect sense.
It’s purple and black and green, installed when the Colorado Rockies held their first spring training at Hi Corbett Field. The scene depicted in the window mimics the Rockies’ official logo, a baseball flying over snow-capped mountain peaks.
“I kind of like it. Aren’t those the Catalinas? ” Lopez said, eyeing the old artwork. “See, I’m already recruiting. Yeah, those are the Catalinas.”
The Wildcats have mastered the art of repurposing since moving into Hi Corbett from Kindall/Sancet Stadium a month ago. Work crews have painted over Rockies purple and Tucson Toros red with the cardinal and navy colors familiar to UA fans. Soon, the Wildcats will move their old video board, two dozen plaques, workout equipment and everything from uniforms to a whirlpool to the midtown park.
By the time the UA opens its season Feb. 17 against North Dakota State, Hi Corbett — for a cost of about $200,000 — will be transformed from a onetime spring training facility into one of the Pac-12’s best baseball facilities.
