Twice the territorial capital, Prescott marked statehood by planting a native white oak more than 20 feet high, the Prescott Weekly Miner-Journal said. Citizens used a spade of silver, copper and gold to throw dirt into the hole.
The Prescott Brass Band played "many patriotic airs," joined by 500 schoolchildren. The Masons - more than 100 - marched from their temple to the ceremony.
Prescott had been the first territorial capital, starting in 1862. The capital was moved to Tucson for a decade, then returned at the end of 1877. The capital permanently moved to Phoenix in 1889.
