One of Arizona's most famous natives, Barry Goldwater, made the Phoenix media during statehood week.
The then-3-year-old was the ring bearer at a wedding. As a Phoenix newspaper reported it, "Master Barry Goldwater … carried in his arms a bow and quiver of arrows … wearing a chaplet of silver leaves and pink rosebuds."
Goldwater, a Republican, went on to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987. He lost the 1964 presidential race.
