In this year leading up to Arizona's centennial, Feb. 14, 2012, we'll reprint a story or excerpts each day from the Arizona Daily Star or Tucson Citizen archives.

Dec. 1, 1912

After cranking an automobile, Mrs. R.J. Machen was run over and injured by the machine yesterday morning. Mrs. Machen's injuries, which are not serious, are painful and she will be able to get about within a few days.

The clutch of the machine was in and the machine started before Mrs. Machen was aware of anything being wrong. The front axle caught her and dragged her a few feet before she was released. The machine kept on going. It ran through three fences, and stopped only when it hit the side of a house.

Mrs. Machen was carried into the house and a physician called immediately. No bones were broken, but she suffered many bruises. It was a very narrow escape.

The machine was scarcely damaged in its few moments of free strolling. The glass in the front lights was not even broken. One of the pipes to the gas tank was bent and this prevented the lamp from being lighted. Other than this the machine was uninjured.
