In this year leading up to Arizona's centennial, Feb. 14, 2012, we'll reprint a story or excerpts each day from the Arizona Daily Star or Tucson Citizen archives.

Dec. 1, 1912

Express and freight originating west of Tucson is now transferred here from the Southern Pacific to the El Paso and Southwestern for Bisbee, Douglas, Naco and Tombstone. The new service went into effect yesterday. This change will put freight and express into the southern towns along the line of the Southwestern 12 hours quicker than on the former service. All freight and express, originating east of Tucson will be sent through Tucson, and this city made the transfer point, provided that the billing is made this way.

This is thought to be an excellent thing for the city by the Wells Fargo officials. They are conducting the business in this manner on their own initiative, in order to give the southern cities the best service possible. The usual run of express from the west is five to six truckloads a day. For the time being, the express will be hauled to the Southwestern depot in the Wells Fargo wagons. It is planned in the near future to have the express for the southern cities come in a special car. This car can be switched to the Southern Pacific. In this way considerable work and time will be saved.

In the past, express and freight for Bisbee and Douglas as well as several other towns in the southern part of the state, has been delivered to the El Paso and Southwestern at Benson. Under the new order, Tucson is made the transfer point.
