That two weeks as a street waif might prove a valuable discipline for an uncontrollable boy was the theory of J. I. Palmer, and wife, when they deserted their eight-year-old son, Jimmie, at Five Points a week ago last Saturday. Palmer was brought back from Globe by Deputy Sheriff Jeff Adams. Mrs. Palmer arrived ahead of him, as she started back in their wagon immediately after the unnatural father was taken into custody by the Globe authorities, at the request of Sheriff Carl Hayden.
This morning Mrs. Palmer made a tearful statement to Probation Officer Vernon Clark. She said that Jimmie was a bad boy and they could not control him. The only scheme that they could devise to make him realize his good fortune in having the tender care of such parents as themselves was to go away and leave him homeless, friendless and penniless for a couple of weeks or so.
Mrs. J.M. Yaple, who took Jimmie to her home after he was deserted by his parents, says that he is a bright boy and a good one. She will regret to give him up, but cannot give him a permanent home.
Palmer was brought back chained to a prisoner named Schaefer, who was sentenced to be hanged March 20 for the murder of a man at Winkelman. Deputy Ralph Sturgis had charge of the murderer. Adams delayed his return a day in order that he might help the Gila county officer bring Schaefer, who had threatened to kill himself at the first opportunity. Schaefer will be taken on to Florence tomorrow.
