Countless words could describe the offensive woes of the Arizona State football team this season.
Quarterback Rudy Carpenter chose "abysmal" and "terrible" after his anemic offense completed its last play Saturday night at Arizona Stadium.
The Sun Devils totaled just 162 yards on offense and 38 on the ground in their 31-10 loss to Arizona, snapping their streak of reaching a bowl game at four consecutive years.
"It's been the same story for us all year long on offense. We just can't make plays," said the senior, who completed 13 of 31 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. He had an interception in his 43rd consecutive start to finish his career 3-1 against the Wildcats.
In what Carpenter called a "huge turning point," Marquis Hundley intercepted Carpenter late in the third quarter, leading to Nicolas Grigsby's 12-yard touchdown run for a 21-10 Arizona lead.
"It starts with me. I didn't play well pretty much all year," Carpenter said. "When that happens it's hard to win games."
Carpenter also revealed he will undergo right knee surgery in the offseason. He suffered the injury against Oregon State on Nov. 1, as well as an ankle injury.
"I won't get a whole bunch of rest," he said.
Final say
ASU coach Dennis Erickson balked at the suggestion he would alter his coaching staff after a 5-7 finish.
"That's ridiculous. If I want to get rid of our offensive coordinator I might as well resign too because I'm just as responsible," he said.
Extra points
● Grigsby reached 1,000 yards for the season on a 30-yard run late in the first quarter, becoming the UA's first 1,000-yard rusher since Clarence Farmer ran for 1,229 in 2001. He finished with 114 yards.
● Arizona scored its first touchdown to cap a 98-yard drive in the first quarter, its longest scoring drive of the season. Rob Gronkowski hauled in quarterback Willie Tuitama's 17-yard pass for a 7-0 UA lead with 31 seconds left. That touchdown was the first ASU had allowed in 11 quarters.
● ASU cornerback Omar Bolden — who earlier in the week guaranteed a Sun Devil victory — grabbed an interception in the end zone to end the first half, preserving a 10-7 ASU lead. Tuitama's pass was intended for Mike Thomas.
● The Sun Devils scored their first touchdown after starting their drive at the Arizona 19, where UA punter Keenyn Crier put his right knee down while receiving the snap for a punt.
● Thomas moved into second place on the Pac-10 career receptions list with his 255th catch leading up to Grigsby's 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. ASU's Derek Hagan tops the list with 258 catches. Thomas also returned his second punt for a touchdown this season, scoring on a 52-yard return for a 28-10 UA lead in the third quarter. He also scored on a 48-yard punt return against Washington.
