Ducks unlimited in first 30 minutesArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.16.2008
EUGENE, Ore. — At halftime, when Oregon's marching band was done with its tribute to the Broadway musical "Wicked," Autzen Stadium announcer Don Essig grabbed the microphone and ran down the Ducks' first-half statistics.
● 6 touchdowns
● 45 points
● 411 yards
"Is that a fun first half, or what?" Essig bellowed.
The crowd roared. The Arizona Wildcats sulked.
Saturday's first half was positively nightmarish for the UA defenders. Oregon scored two touchdowns in the first 1 minute 32 seconds, kicked a field goal as the half expired and basically dominated everything in between.
The Ducks averaged a point every 40 seconds.
"They kicked out butts," defensive coordinator Mark Stoops said.
Leading the way was Jeremiah Masoli, the speedy quarterback who shunned a scholarship offer from Arizona. He accounted for a career-high 361 yards of total offense in the first half alone. He completed 17 of 19 passes and two TDs and rushed seven times for 87 yards.
Masoli had three rushing touchdowns, including a 66-yarder on the Ducks' third play from scrimmage. He faked a handoff to tailback Jeremiah Johnson out of the shotgun formation and bolted to the sidelines. Arizona's Ronnie Palmer missed an ankle tackle; outside of that, he was untouched.
Masoli added scoring runs of 5 and 6 yards in the second quarter to blow the game open.
The Wildcats have to go back 85 years to find a worse half. Arizona allowed 52 second-half points to USC and lost 69-6 in 1923.
Saturday's performance was easily the worst in the Mike Stoops era. The Wildcats allowed 35 points to the Trojans in 2004, Stoops' first year at the UA.
"We shot ourselves in the foot, times 10, in the first half," Palmer said.
Scott time
Freshman quarterback Matt Scott was inserted into the lineup with 7 minutes 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter, though he didn't stay there for long.
Scott rushed for 16 yards on a zone-read play before being lifted for starter Willie Tuitama.
Scott re-emerged later in the drive for one play, but was stuffed for no gain. He finished with 39 yards on four carries.
"We just wanted to get him some plays," offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes said.
Whether Saturday's decision was a sign of things to come or just a sign of desperation remains to be seen. Scott has primarily been used in mop-up situations this season. He had three carries for 24 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over Washington State.
Double Gronk day
Saturday's game was memorable for Arizona's set of offensive-minded brothers.
Tight end Rob Gronkowski and H-back Chris Gronkowski set career highs in both catches and yards. Rob grabbed 12 passes for 143 yards, while Chris caught three for 84 yards.
Both had touchdown catches.
"Chris and Robbie played tremendously," Mike Stoops said. "They complement each other. Chris is a tremendous fullback, and Robbie's a big part of our offense."
