EUGENE, Ore. — The Arizona Wildcats' couldn't overcome their disastrous start, even with a hot finish.
Keola Antolin scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns but dropped a key fourth-down pass, and Oregon held on for a 55-45 win at a raucous Autzen Stadium. LeGarrette Blount's 40-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes 38 seconds remaining gave the Ducks a two-score lead that held.
The Wildcats nearly pulled off their biggest upset in Pac-10 Conference play. The UA's1983 team rallied from a 23-point deficit on the way to a 33-33 tie with Cal.
Arizona must now win at least one of its final two games to make an upper-tier bowl game. The Wildcats can finish now better than the Ducks, who own a 1 1/2-game lead with just one more game to play.
Arizona got the ball ball with 5:25 remaining at the Ducks' 38-yard line. Keola Antolin was stuffed on first down. Willie Tuitama then missed a deep pass to Chris Gronkowski on second down.Mike Thomas gained seven yards on a short passa on third down. Facing fourth and three, Tutiama attempted a swing pass to Antolin in the flat. The freshman tailback dropped it in open space.
Oregon rolled over Arizona in the first half, scoring six touchdowns and posting 411 yards of total offense.
Arizona's first half performance was the worst in the Mike Stoops era. The 42 points allowed are the most since 2003, when LSU scores 38 points in the first half on the way to a blowout victory at Arizona Stadium.
Saturday, the Wildcats were in trouble from the beginning.
Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli had a 66-yard touchdown run on the Ducks' third play from scrimmage. Rover Patrick Chung made it 14-0 when he intercepted Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama on the Wildcats' third play from scrimmage; he returned the pick 31 yards for a score. Arizona rallied back into the game by running the ball. Nicolas Grigsby's big runs set up a 29-yard field goal by Jason Bondzio.
Keola Antolin's 2-yard touchdown run with 2:16 remaining in the quarter cut Oregon's advantage to 14-10. Antolin's dive capped a nine-play, 37-yard drive and pulled the Wildcats back into a game that started disastrously.
