STANFORD, Calif. — The Arizona Wildcats' hopes for a breakthrough season, and their vaunted defense, have taken a major hit.
Toby Gerhart's one-yard run with 25 seconds remaining gave Stanford a dramatic, 24-23 come from behind victory on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal rallied from a six-point deficit on its final drive to pull off the win. Third string quarterback Alex Loukas led the Cardinal down the field running a lead-draw running attack in Loukas' quarterback keeper on third down and six from Arizona's nine-yard line set up Gerhart's score.
Arizona falls to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Stanford improves to 4-3 and 3-1 in the Pac-10.
The Wildcats forced two turnovers in the final eight minutes of the second quarter, turning them into 14 points.
Cam Nelson forced Stanford's Michael Thomas to fumble on an improvised draw play with 7:45 remaining before halftime, giving Arizona the ball at midfield. Three plays later, UA tailback Nicolas Grigsby broke off a 25-yard touchdown run to take the lead.
Stanford drove on its ensuring possession, getting inside Arizona's 40 before safety Nate Ness intercepted quarterback Tavita Pritchard and returned 75 yards for a score. Ness' big return gave the Cats a 17-7 lead.
