Bret Brielmaier will be on the floor again this season for the Arizona Wildcats. He just won't be using his banged-up shoulder.
Brielmaier held off his graduation plans this summer in order to become an undergraduate assistant coach, a position that NCAA rules allow for fifth-year students who have used all four years of eligibility but have yet to graduate.
Brielmaier's alternatives were graduating and taking a UA administrative role that would not allow him to coach, or heading elsewhere. So, for an aspiring college coach, the decision was a no-brainer.
"Having the chance to work under Coach (Lute Olson) and the new staff, I figured it was a great opportunity to start my career here," Brielmaier said.
Not only will the job better position Brielmaier to coach but it also will keep him as close to playing action than he is likely to ever have again.
Brielmaier spent most of last season in and out of UA's rotation with what was termed a separated shoulder, and he said further evaluation indicated the injury is worse than initially believed.
Brielmaier said the injury involves the labrum cartilage in his shoulder and that there are tears. He said corrective surgery would leave him with only a 50-50 chance of playing again.
"It'll be with me the rest of my life until I get it fixed," Brielmaier said.
Brielmaier, who averaged 14.6 minutes in 21 games as a senior, said he has yet to undergo an operation.
Elite camp set
Although August is a "quiet period" in the NCAA recruiting calendar, when only on-campus recruiting is allowed, the Wildcats are once again bringing in several of their top high school targets for an elite skills camp Thursday through Saturday.
Among those confirmed to attend: California wing Anthony Brown (No. 49 in Rivals.com's 2010 rankings), California point guard Gary Franklin (No. 98 in 2010), California wing Tyler Lamb (No. 96 in 2010) and Santa Rita point guard Terrell Stoglin (No. 93 in 2010).
It is also possible that highly regarded California center Anthony Stover, Phoenix guard Daniel Bejarano and Greek prospect Thanasis Eioakimiduis will be on hand. Portland, Ore., forward Mike Moser, a committed UA 2009 recruit, said Tuesday he was unsure if he would attend but may rest after playing in the Global Challenge last weekend in Portland.
Many current UA players are expected to be at the camp, and participate in a Friday afternoon pick-up game along with former players who may include Hassan Adams, Channing Frye, Luke Walton, Richard Jefferson and Mike Bibby.
Gaddy still unsure
A week after attending last year's camp, 2009 point guard Abdul Gaddy committed to the Wildcats, but Gaddy remains undecided after decommitting in May.
Gaddy confirmed via text message Tuesday that his new finalists are UA, Washington, Oregon, Memphis and UCLA but said he had no timetable to decide.
Hill pre-trial scheduled
An attorney for UA forward Jordan Hill entered a not guilty plea before his arraignment Tuesday at Tucson City Court in connection with a disorderly conduct charge. Hill now has a pre-trial conference scheduled for Sept. 10.
Hill was cited for disorderly conduct Aug. 1 after he ignored a Tucson police officer's command to stop fighting, and the officer subsequently deployed a Taser on him.
