Seen and heard at Pac-10 media day

GIVE IT A CHANCE
• Pete Carroll woke up in the middle of the night Wednesday. He had an idea.
The USC coach wants to invite both presidential candidates to a peace rally Aug. 2. UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel can come, too, he joked.
Carroll will be a speaker at "L.A. Livepeace," an Aug. 2 rally and march at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The march — down Martin Luther King Boulevard — will be a gathering of community activist groups from the Los Angeles area.
"I realized what an extraordinary opportunity it would be for our presidential candidates," Carroll said.
BOOK REPORT
• The Cal Golden Bears ended last season reeling, losing six of seven after starting the season 5-0 and earning a No. 2 national ranking.
Coach Jeff Tedford found a way to recover. "We actually did a book report," he said.
The coaching staff read "Talent is Never Enough: Discover the Choices That Will Take You Beyond Your Talent," a 2007 book by John Maxwell. Tedford had his coaching staff each read a chapter and present book reports to the team.
"It really touched on a lot of things — that you can't just rely on talent," he said.
QUOTABLE
• "I imagine it'll be a lot of boos."
— UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, on what he anticipates hearing when the Bruins play at his former school, Washington
BASEBALL SUMMER
• Washington's Jake Locker spent his summer playing for the Bellingham (Wash.) Bells of the amateur West Coast Collegiate Baseball League.
Locker trained for football on campus during the week and played baseball Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He did it with the approval of coach Tyrone Willingham, who played baseball and football at Michigan State.
"I have to hone my competitive edge," said Locker, who was drafted by the Angels out of high school. "Any time you're able to do something that counts and they keep score, it's fun. It didn't take away from what I did, football-wise."
LOGOS
• Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen could use a little language lesson.
When describing the wealth of talent at the quarterback position, Hansen praised Arizona's … Willie Ta-in-tima?
That is Tuitama. You know, the four-year starter.
Hansen has redeemed himself with the tweaked Pac-10 logo. The blue and white design has stayed mostly the same — but the word "Pac" is now all uppercase and more angular than the former logo. The old logo used curved, lower-case letters.
NEW, OLD HELMET
• Paul Wulff is bringing the "Cougars" back to Washington State's helmets.
He said Thursday the team will return to wearing silver helmets at home with a script "Cougars" spelled out in maroon. Last year, the team wore a stylized cougar head on both its home and road helmets.
Wulff will keep the cougar head on the road helmets but wanted to return to the school's traditional home hats.
"When you talk about having tradition in your school, having those things, that was a big consideration," he said. "That's a little piece of the tradition that can stay with the university."
